Why are my Shopify store emails going to spam?

Shopify store emails usually go to spam because the domain in your sender email isn't authenticated with Shopify, or has no DMARC record. Shopify then sends from a store+number@shopifyemail.com address instead of yours, and customers who don't recognize that sender are quicker to report it as spam.

This affects everything your store sends from your sender email: order confirmations, shipping updates, abandoned checkout reminders and marketing emails sent with Shopify Email. The fix is a handful of DNS records, and Shopify can often add them for you.

Where your store's emails come from

Shopify sends your store emails from its own mail servers, using the address you set as your sender email. You'll find it in your Shopify admin under Settings → Notifications, in the Sender email section. It's the From address customers see.

Because Shopify's servers send on behalf of your domain, receivers like Gmail and Yahoo check whether yourbusiness.com has given Shopify permission. That permission comes from three things:

  • DKIM: a digital signature that proves an email came from your domain and wasn't changed on the way.
  • SPF: a DNS record that lists the servers allowed to send email for your domain.
  • DMARC: a DNS record that tells receivers what to do with email that fails SPF and DKIM, and sends you reports.

Shopify's CNAME records set up DKIM and SPF for you. DMARC is a separate record you add yourself.

Cause 1: your domain isn't authenticated

Shopify's help notes that since February 1, 2024, Gmail and Yahoo require you to authenticate your domain and have a DMARC record to send to customers from a branded address. If you haven't added Shopify's records, Shopify rewrites your sender email to a store+123@shopifyemail.com address so your emails keep sending.

That keeps emails flowing, but it costs you. Customers don't recognize the address, and an email from a sender people don't recognize is more likely to be reported as spam.

If you bought your domain through Shopify, Shopify says it authenticates the domain automatically. This cause mostly affects domains bought from another registrar.

Cause 2: a DMARC record is missing or set up in a way Shopify can't use

Shopify needs a DMARC record on your domain, at minimum v=DMARC1; p=none. Without one, it rewrites your sender address. It also rewrites it if:

  • you have more than one DMARC record (there must be exactly one)
  • your DMARC record asks for strict alignment, with adkim=s or aspf=s

Strict alignment means the signing domain must match your From domain exactly. Shopify's help lists it as a reason for rewriting your address, so leave alignment at the default (relaxed) setting.

Cause 3: you use a free email address

If your sender email is a Gmail, Yahoo or similar address, you can't add DNS records for that domain. Shopify can't authenticate it, so your emails go out from a shopifyemail.com address. Use an address at your own domain instead, such as orders@yourbusiness.com.

Cause 4: marketing emails and complaints

For marketing emails, authentication is only the first step. Gmail and Yahoo also watch how many people report your emails as spam. Shopify's deliverability guide notes the 0.3% limit Gmail and Yahoo enforce, and suggests staying below 0.1%.

Complaints go up when people get marketing they didn't expect. Only email customers who agreed to receive marketing, send what they signed up for, and remove addresses that bounce.

How to authenticate your domain in Shopify

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Settings → Notifications.
  2. In the Sender email section, enter an address at your own domain, such as orders@yourbusiness.com.
  3. Look for the link to authenticate your domain (Shopify's help calls it Email domain authentication).
  4. If Shopify offers to Authenticate automatically, follow the steps to connect to your DNS provider. Otherwise, add every CNAME record Shopify shows at your DNS provider. The number of records can vary, so add all of them.
  5. Add a DMARC record if you don't already have one (see below).
  6. Come back to the same page and check that Shopify shows the domain as authenticated. DNS changes can take some time to be picked up.

Shopify's minimum DMARC record is v=DMARC1; p=none. We suggest adding a reporting address so you can see who sends email as you. Add this TXT record at _dmarc.yourbusiness.com. It starts in monitoring mode (p=none), so nothing changes for your email yet. Change the rua address to a mailbox you read; once reports show all your genuine email passing, move to p=quarantine.

v=DMARC1; p=none; rua=mailto:dmarc-reports@yourbusiness.com

If a DMARC record already exists, don't add a second one. Edit the existing record instead, and remove any adkim=s or aspf=s.

Check that your store emails pass

The simplest way to check is to make your store send a real email to your private test address. For example, place a test order using that address as the customer's email.

The report shows whether DKIM passes for yourbusiness.com, whether DMARC passes with alignment, and a verdict for Gmail, Google Workspace, Outlook.com, Microsoft 365 and Yahoo. If the From address in the report is a shopifyemail.com address, Shopify is still rewriting it, which means authentication or DMARC isn't finished yet. Each failed check comes with the exact record to fix.

Questions people ask

Why do my Shopify emails come from store+123@shopifyemail.com?

Shopify rewrites your sender email to a shopifyemail.com address when your domain isn't authenticated, has no valid DMARC record, or is a free email address like Gmail. Authenticate your domain and add a DMARC record to send from your own address again.

Do I need to do anything if I bought my domain from Shopify?

Shopify says domains bought through Shopify are authenticated automatically. If your sender email uses a domain you bought elsewhere, you need to add the records Shopify shows.

Can I use a Gmail address as my Shopify sender email?

You can, but Shopify can't authenticate it, so your emails will be sent from a shopifyemail.com address instead. Use an address at your own domain, such as orders@yourbusiness.com.

Do I need to add Shopify to my SPF record?

Shopify's CNAME records set up both DKIM and SPF for your sender email, so you don't normally edit your main SPF record. Add every record Shopify shows, and keep only one SPF record on your domain.

My domain is authenticated but marketing emails still go to spam. Why?

Then the likely cause is how people react to your emails. Shopify asks merchants to keep complaints below 0.1%, and Gmail and Yahoo act at 0.3%. Email only customers who agreed to marketing, and remove addresses that bounce.
